South Swindon MP Sir Robert Buckland has welcomed the news that evacuees from Afghanistan will be relocated from the Marriott Hotel in Swindon after a lengthy stay, following his discussions with the Home Office.

A significant number of refugees were temporarily placed at the hotel in Pipers Way by the Home Office after the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021. The ongoing situation in the country remains highly uncertain.

Sir Robert has been pressing the Home Office to resolve the situation and provide a longer-term plan.

Following this, new plans, backed by new funding, have now been announced by the Home Office to speed the resettlement of Afghans, including those here in Swindon, so that they can benefit from security and stability, allowing them to successfully rebuild their lives.

This includes new funding for local councils, including Swindon Borough Council, to increase the level of support available locally.

Sir Robert Buckland MP said:

“Many Afghans made an invaluable contribution to the British Military and our international partners, standing by the UK to uphold democratic values. They have fled genuine persecution, and righty came here through safe and legal routes.

“This new plan and the new funding will help to take the pressure off local councils, including Swindon Borough Council, and reduce the use of hotels which do not offer suitable long-term accommodation and have added pressure on local communities.

“I am pleased with the level of engagement there has been with me on this important and sensitive matter.”

More information concerning the support being provided to hotel guests, and additional funding being offered to Local Authorities and Councils can be found here:
