Remembrance Sunday is an extremely important occasion in our nation’s calendar. It is a day for our nation to commemorate and honour those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom, in conflicts past and present.

Each year, we play our part in the wreath laying ceremony at the Swindon Cenotaph in Regents Circus. Each year, the number of people who come to pay their respects grows and grows, so it will be of great disappointment to many people here in Swindon, that this year, due to the COVID 19 Pandemic, we will be unable to attend the parade and services.

That doesn’t mean that Remembrance Day itself is cancelled this year, we just need to find other ways to come together as a local community to mark this occasion and pay our respects in a different way.

I am encouraging people here in the town to do this by decorating their windows with poppies.

Printable Royal British Legion Poppies are available here: https://www.robertbuckland.co.uk/news/swindon-mps-call-residents-decorate-homes-schools-shops-and-businesses-poppies-remembrance-day

We are also calling on local schools and businesses to become involved and display poppies.

Every Poppy and image I am sent will be displayed proudly in the Gallery below:

Many thanks to the Staff and Pupils at Peatmoor Primary School for sending me a photograph of their excellent Poppy display. Some of the Year 5 pupils have also worked hard to produce a video for the online service at All Saints Church in Lydiard Millicent.  A Remembrance Assembly will be held at school on 11th November and a 2 minute silence will be observed at 11am.

Many thanks to the staff and pupils at Westlea Primary School for sending in pictures of their fantastic Poppy display. All of the children have designed and made poppies, which have been planted outside the front of the school. Also, due to not being able to design the crosses for the Walled Garden at Lydiard this year, each of the KS2 classes have written words, prayers and messages on 60 crosses which have been planted with the poppies.

Tomorrow, the whole school will take part in a virtual assembly at 10.45am. The assembly will include a 2 minute silence and reflection.
