North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson and South Swindon MP Robert Buckland have welcomed the announcement that Swindon Borough Council is set to benefit from an extra £50million of Government funding to help families at risk of homelessness this winter.

Swindon Borough Council is expected to receive £310,000 as part of an additional £50million being made available to Local Authorities across England through an ‘exceptional winter’ top up to the Homelessness Prevention Grant. Councils will have the flexibility to target the additional financial support at those who need it most. This may include helping households at risk of eviction pay off their rent arrears or supporting families with their search and deposits to secure a new home.

The funding is on top of £316million Homeless Prevention Grant already allocated to councils for 2022-23 and is part of a £2billion package of government support to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping over the next three years.

Over the last two years Swindon has received £3.8million from the Homelessness Prevention Grant, with the latest funding increasing that amount to £4.1million.

Justin Tomlinson MP and Robert Buckland MP said: “We are pleased the Government is again making additional funding for Local Authorities to provide additional, co-ordinated support.  Swindon Borough Council have always been willing to step forward to provide vital support for families at risk of homelessness, whether wrap around support, helping with rent arrears or contributing towards the cost of moving to a new home."
