My hon. Friend has put it eloquently. Populism is no substitute for responsible government or responsible opposition.

Some of us actually believe in talking up our country, rather than talking it down.

It is very easy, in the eye of a storm, to cast caution to the winds and throw away sensible and well worked out convention.
